Berlin (dpa / bb) – More than four years after a violent dispute between two families, a criminal case against a 30-year-old has ended with an acquittal. It could not be proven that he was involved in an attack on several men, justified the Berlin district court on Friday. Previously, three witnesses had invoked a right to refuse to provide information through a lawyer. “The injured party no longer wanted to participate in the investigation,” the verdict continued.

Several men had slowed down a car in the Wedding district in August 2017 and attacked the occupants with baseball and ice hockey sticks. One of the attackers pulled the passenger out of the car and stabbed the man in the face with a bayonet. The passenger was seriously injured. Another inmate was pulled out of the vehicle and hit with a stick. The attacked handed over 3,000 euros in cash for fear of further injuries. The charges included dangerous bodily harm and severe predatory extortion.

The incident led to the first trial at the regional court in November 2020. Three men between the ages of 25 and 41 were charged. At that time, too, the alleged victims – a father and two of his sons – remained silent as witnesses. They only stated that they were related to the defendants, it said in the current judgment. The prosecutor and defense attorney had also pleaded for acquittal.
