FC Barcelona is in debt with 1.35 billion euros. That doesn’t stop him from buying an expensive player. Ferrán Torres comes from Manchester City – and gets a very high price tag.

The 21-year-old professional has signed a contract for five and a half years up to and including June 30, 2027, the Spanish club announced on Tuesday. A replacement clause of one billion euros was stipulated in it, it said. Such clauses are a mandatory part of Spanish contracts. The new teammate of national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is said to be officially presented on January 3rd in the Camp Nou stadium.
Nothing was officially announced about the transfer fee. According to consistent reports from Spanish specialist media, it should amount to 55 million euros – plus performance-related bonuses of up to ten million euros. The club, which is highly indebted with 1.35 billion euros, is trying to sell several professionals such as Luuk de Jong, Philippe Coutinho or Samuel Umtiti in order to be able to comply with the league rules for the total amount of player salaries.
Since his move from Valencia CF to Manchester in summer 2020, Torres had not been able to establish himself as a regular with the Premier League champions and table leaders. In 43 competitive games, however, he scored 16 goals. In spite of his young age, he also scored frequently in the Spanish national team: twelve times in a total of 22 appearances.
Barça’s new coach Xavi can use the reinforcement: In the Primera División, his team is only seventh with 28 points from 18 games. At the top, arch-rivals Real Madrid with Toni Kroos and David Alaba already have an 18-point lead in one more game. Because of corona infections, bans and injuries, Xavi currently has to do without ten top performers.
