The Spanish Mountain Federation rewards Ángel Fernández Ortega from Turon

The mountaineer from Turon, Ángel Fernández Ortega, will be honored on December 11 in Madrid with the Hiking and Trails award granted by the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (Fedme). The award recognizes the work carried out by the mountaineer, who collaborates with LA NUEVA ESPAÑA, during all these years promoting hiking in Asturias.

“I did not expect to receive this type of awards with the years that I have, but it still comes on time”, explained the winner, who alluded to the work carried out in favor of hiking since 1994. “Then there was nothing and now there are more than 10,000 kilometers marked hiking trails in Asturias; we are the ones with the most routes ”per inhabitant, he pointed out. He also argued that “more and more people are hiking. Before the pandemic there were also many fans, but now there are many more; it is another way of selling the territory ”.

Fernández Ortega has stood out, above all, for the production of a good number of guides and books. Among them, “78 routes through Asturian nature”, which was translated into four languages; “The 100 most beautiful mountains in Asturias” or “The humanistic landscape of the valleys of Miere.” Currently, a Ribadesella guide commissioned by the “Amigos de Ribadesella” cultural association is nearing completion. The mountaineer will receive the Fedme award during an event that will take place on the 11th at the General Sports Directorate in Madrid.
