The real reason for the frustration

The 21-year-old Norwegian is hotly courted. He could move to a top club next summer. Borussia Dortmund tries everything to keep him.

Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund fights for the whereabouts of the top striker Erling Haaland. As the “Sport Bild” reported, there will be concrete talks with BVB in January. Accordingly, the club is planning a raise to keep the young Norwegian. And it should have it all: According to the report, a doubling of his salary (Here you get more information) from 8 to 16 million euros per year.

Rumors that Haaland could leave the club early next summer have been around for months. In his contract, which runs until 2024, an exit clause is anchored that allows him to switch for well below his market value of 150 million euros.

“We will look for the best option. I do not rule out that he will stay with Dortmund for another year,” said Haaland advisor Mino Raiola most recently the Dutch radio station NOS. The BVB managing director had a similar view Hans-Joachim Watzke in “Bild” and referred to a recently “very good conversation” with Raiola: “Erling may leave, he may stay.” That leads to the question:

Should BVB double Haaland’s salary to keep him?

Yes, because it is Dortmund’s only chance

Erling Haaland is Borussia Dortmund’s life insurance company. He has scored 75 goals in 76 competitive games for the club. A crazy rate! At the age of 21, he is the leader and at the same time the biggest star of the team. There are very few strikers of his caliber in the world. And they are expensive. Therefore, it is right if the BVB bosses do everything they can from a financial point of view to keep him a little longer. Doubling the salary is Dortmund’s only chance.

Haaland is the best striker in the Bundesliga after Robert Lewandowski. But while the Bayern star earns almost 20 million euros a year, the Norwegian has “only” eight. And: According to the salary comparison site “salarysport.com”, which specializes in professional athletes, Haaland is not even at the top of the club’s internal salary ranking, but only in fifth place – behind Marco Reus, Mats Hummels, Thomas Meunier and Emre Can. That’s not okay.

A doubling to 16 million sounds illusory, but it would be in line with the market. Even if that is difficult for us mere mortals to accept: BVB has to make Haaland an immoral offer to convince him to stay. Otherwise he’ll be gone in summer for sure.

No, this is an explosive factor for the salary structure

Is Haaland worth a salary of 16 million euros a year? Definitely! Especially when it enriches the Bundesliga by 2023.

Unfortunately, doubling the salary would bypass the issue. The striker is frustrated, that became clear in the 2: 3 against Hertha. First and foremost, he is not annoyed about low pay, but rather about the inability of his teammates. Haaland wants to win everything, they can’t.

This discrepancy is also BVB’s real problem. Before Haaland finally despairs, Dortmund should rather collect the transfer fee and get a top successor who wants to stay in the long term – as well as strengthen the squad as a whole.

Anyway: If Dortmund pays a player 16 million, that is explosive for the salary structure. With a weaker game by Haaland, the complaints start immediately and players like Reus also want more money. In the same way, consultants rate potential access higher. That can no longer be captured.

If BVB wants to discuss a Bayern hunt again soon instead of the departure of their best player, they should invest their money wisely and not just pour Haaland down the throat.
