The 2019 US Open winner Andreescu interrupts her career to rest mentally

The 21-year-old tennis player admitted in a statement on Twitter that she had been mentally and physically affected by weeks in solitary confinement due to covidem-19 and was deeply shaken by several weeks of hospitalization of her infected grandmother in the intensive care unit.

“I didn’t feel very often in my skin, especially during training or matches. I felt like I was carrying the weight of the whole world on my shoulders. I couldn’t detach myself from everything that happened outside the courts, I felt the general sadness and worries and that took its toll on me, “she said.

Andreescu, who experienced the greatest triumph of her career at the age of nineteen, thus became another of the professional athletes who decided to withdraw in time as part of their mental health care.

For example, former world number one and four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka took the same step. The Japanese tennis player took a break after Roland Garros and another after the US Open, when she ended the season.
