Tennis world rankings: Alexander Zverev in top three – Angelique Kerber shows an upward trend

At Zverev, the title stands out at the ATP Finals. Especially the victory in the semi-finals against world number one Novak Djokovic was the perfect end to a successful tennis year for the German.

Zverev reached the finals at the Masters in Paris, among others, but lost to second in the world, Daniil Medvedev.

At the US Open, Zverev ended up in the semifinals, losing an epic fight against Djokovic 2: 3. And it is precisely these two players who were placed ahead of him in the world rankings at the end of the year.

For the German, it goes from seventh place at the beginning of the year up to number three. Since May 2019, the Hamburger has once again been one of the three best tennis players in the world.

Kerber improves in ranking

Angelique Kerber, on the other hand, had a curious tennis year in 2021.

The end in the first round of the French Open was sobering, but the former world number one played more and more like in past glorious times. Kerber’s best performance of the season was achieved at the prestigious Wimbledon tournament in London. In the semifinals, however, she lost a tough fight against world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia.

The German is currently still lacking the last conviction to play for the title in major tournaments, but in the WTA world rankings she made a jump to 16th place and is as high as last time in October 2019. At the beginning of the year, the Kiel woman was ranked 25th.
