Tennis: Bianca Andreescu will miss the start of the next season

TORONTO – Canada’s Bianca Andreescu has decided to skip the Australian Open next month, saying she needs more time to recover physically and mentally.

The 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., Announced his decision on his social media on Monday. She said the quarantine needed in Australia and the scare she felt when her grandmother was diagnosed with COVID-19 affected her greatly.

“The past two years have been very difficult for me for a number of reasons,” wrote the 2019 US Open winner.

Andreescu says she spent “several weeks” in quarantine, while her grandmother spent several weeks in the intensive care unit battling the virus, “which left a deep mark on me.”

“A lot of times I didn’t feel like myself, especially in training or in games,” she added. I felt that I had all the weight in the world on my shoulders. “

She played her last tournament in Indian Wells in October. The then defending champion was eliminated in the third round by Estonian Anett Kontaveit. It was his first loss in nine games at Indian Wells.

“I want to give myself more time to rebuild my health, grow from this ordeal (as cliché as it sounds) and continue to be an inspiration by continuing my charitable work. I know that by giving back and working on myself, I will come back stronger than ever. “

Andreescu recently wrote a children’s book (“Bibi’s Got Game”) about tennis, meditation and perseverance. It is due for release at the end of May.
