Team Qhubeka officially disappears from World Tour, 18 teams remain | cycling

It was clear – just like last year – in the last months of the year that Qhubeka was struggling financially. The team survived last year, but not this year.

The UCI refused to register Qhubeka after the team – like the others – was examined on several criteria: ethical, financial, administrative, organizational.

The 18 teams remaining at the highest level will automatically be allowed to participate in all races on the WorldTour calendar, as will Belgium’s Alpecin-Fenix and France’s Arkéa-Samsic.

Those two teams finished at the top of the second division and are certain to start in the 3 big rounds (Tour, Giro, Vuelta). Third is the French TotalEnergies has been invited for the one-day races on the WorldTour calendar in 2022.

Qhubeka was a special team – the first African top team – with an extra mission: to promote the bike on the African continent. The team saw the light of day in 2008 and has been active at the highest level since 2016.

Qhubeka took part in the Tour six times. It won seven stages at La Grande Boucle, four of which were with British sprinter Mark Cavendish.

The South African formation had 27 riders in 2021. They had known for a while that they could look for other places. The 3 Belgians ended up elsewhere: Victor Campenaerts with Lotto-Soudal, Sander Armée with Cofidis and Dimitri Claeys with Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert.
