Stan Wawrinka is postponing his comeback. The almost 37-year-old Romand is not on the registration list for the Australian Open from January 17th to 30th in Melbourne.

Wawrinka is missing a complete Grand Slam season because of two foot operations. At the end of March, he had his left foot operated for the first time. Back then, shortly before his 36th birthday, Wawrinka expected a break of a few weeks. At the beginning of June, however, Wawrinka had to have a second operation – and there is still no information on his comeback schedule.

In the world rankings, Wawrinka is currently still in 82nd place. In the next three months, he is threatened with disappearing completely from the ranking, especially since he only played four tournaments and won only two singles in the first two months of the 2021 season.

In Melbourne, where Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam title in 2014, Serena Williams is missing in addition to Wawrinka and Roger Federer. The Swiss Belinda Bencic (WTA 23), Jil Teichmann (WTA 37), Viktorija Golubic (WTA 43) and Henri Laaksonen (ATP 97) are registered and qualified for the main draw.
