Santiago sports dresses up

In a great celebration of the victories of the sport of Santiago, the awards ceremony for the best athletes of the so-called “hot land” was converted in 2021, which was held at the Salón de los Vitrales in the Plaza de la Revolución Antonio Maceo Grajales.

Specially dedicated to the 63rd anniversary of the Revolution and to the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the activity recognized the work of the director of the Provincial Center for Sports Medicine, Dr. Eloy Oliveros Serrano, for his contributions to the development of muscle activity in the indomitable province, which made him worthy of the Order of Sports Merit, from the hands of the main political and governmental authorities of Santiago de Cuba.

Also moving was the tribute to the most outstanding athletes of the awards: the discóbola Yaimé Perez Téllez, the taekwondo player Rafael Yunier Alba Castillo, the jumper Maykel Demetrio Massó Bavastro, the beach volleyball player Maylén Delís, the baseball player Santiago Torres Baena and the sprinter Omara Durand Elías, who reigned among the disabled.

Likewise, the 10 Best of the Year were recognized: Zurian Hechavarría Martén (athletics / 400 meters with hurdles and 4×400 relay), Kaliema Antomarchi Merencio (judo / -78kg), Maylín Del Toro Carvajal (judo / -63kg), Geandry Garzón Caballero (fight free / -74kg), Gabriel Alejandro Rosillo Kindelán (Greco-Roman wrestling / -97kg), Luis Enrique Zayas Fernández (athletics / high jump), Ismael Borrero Molina (Greco-Roman wrestling / -66kg), Yoelquis Guibert Stevens (baseball) and the Great Teacher Maritza Arribas Robaina (chess).

In the event, in addition, the most outstanding athletes in the youth category, as well as the disabled, were awarded. Special mention received the representatives from Santiago who attended the I Pan American Youth Games in Cali-Valle 2021.

In this regard, René Alejandro Méndez Vinajera, table tennis athlete, read a message on behalf of all the guests, in which they thanked all the support of their families, coaches and the people of Santiago, and promised to put the name high from this land of champions in the new Olympic cycle that will conclude in 2024, at the Paris Games.
