Samantha Stosur makes a big decision: individual career ends after Australian Open

Samantha Stosur is an all-rounder. The Australian won Grand Slam titles in singles (1), doubles (4) and mixed (3).

At least her individual career will end with Stosur, currently number 382 in the world rankings.

Her last appearance to date was at the US Open in the summer. Stosur was defeated by Estonian Anett Kontaveit in round one – but won the double competition alongside Shuai Zhang.

The so-called “Happy Slam” in Melbourne should now be the crowning glory. “I’m so excited to play my 20th Australian Open in a couple of weeks,” said the 37-year-old.

“A huge thank you to Tennis Australia for the opportunity to end my solo career in my home Grand Slam,” Stosur wrote on Instagram.

“It really means a lot to me to finish in front of my family, friends and Australian fans who have gone through thick and thin with me.”

Stosur still has plans for doubles

In doubles, however, the fans should look forward to more matches of the tennis professional from Brisbane.

“I plan to play doubles for the rest of the year,” emphasized Stosur, who was number one in the doubles ranking for 62 weeks.
