Óliver Pérez, a full-time icing on the cake

CULIACÁN._ Last Tuesday, November 30, Oliver Perez began its 13th season with the Tomateros de Culiacán. His first was in 1999-00 and 22 years later, he is a legend of Mexican baseball.

However, sour cherries are still at the top of their priorities.

“Tomateros de Culiacán has always been the best team I have played for,” confessed the experienced southpaw.

For the left-handed culichi, the cherry team is something completely part of his life. Either as a player, when circumstances have allowed it or as a fan, but he always has them in mind.

“I always follow the team, online. I try to see the games, the results, which guys are playing, who are not. I think it is part of my routine, as a team fan, “he confessed.

Pérez sees playing with Tomateros as a great responsibility, something that is even greater as he is a native of Culiacán. For this reason, winning the championship is something that is always on his mind and he considers that the current route is the correct one.

“The most important thing is to finish hard and that is how Culiacán has always been classified, finish the seasons hard and in the playoffs everyone knows the results that Culiacán has had in recent years,” he said.

Oliver’s first pitches as icing on the cake were as a reliever, until he settled in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a starter. In 2011 he began a comeback to reliever, which has brought him success in recent years, as well as many joys.

“Now as a relief, I am with the spikes on from the first inning and it’s like I’m getting a little more taste in baseball, because you want to or not, I have to be ready every day, prepare every day and you bring like the thorn whether or not you’re going to pitch and that thorn, I liked it a lot, “he said.

This summer, after leaving the organization of Cleveland Indians, Oliver decided to leave baseball for a while. USA, to represent the Mexico in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Once the goal has been achieved, although his present is the icing on the cake, he projects a future back in Las Mayores.

“I’m going to look for the other season in the United States, look for season 20,” he said.
