Novak Djokovic retires from the ATP Cup

(CNN) — The world’s No. 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic, has withdrawn from the Serbian team for next week’s ATP Cup in Sydney, event organizers announced on Wednesday.

No reason has been given for Djokovic’s withdrawal from the competition.

“The world number 1, Novak Djokovic, has withdrawn from the ATP Cup. Serbia remains in the competition and will be led by the world number 33, Dusan Lajovic,” the ATP said in a statement on its website.

Djokovic, who is tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for 20 Grand Slam titles, has yet to commit to taking part in next month’s Australian Open following a mandate from organizers to get vaccinated against the covid-19 virus.

The 34-year-old, who has won a record nine titles at Melbourne Park, including the last three, has repeatedly refused to reveal whether he has been vaccinated against covid-19.

Although Djokovic has been included in the entry list for the first Grand Slam of 2022, last month his father, Srdjan Djokovic, said that his son would probably not participate in the tournament because of the obligation to get vaccinated.

The Australian Open kicks off in Melbourne on January 17.
