NFL: Jimmy Garoppolo wants to try to play despite a tear in his right thumb

Jimmy Garoppolo will not need surgery for his injured right thumb due to a broken bone and a torn ligament.

Whether the San Francisco 49ers quarterback will be a starter for Sunday’s game is still uncertain.

Garoppolo suffered the injury in Thursday night’s loss to the Tennessee Titans. He plans to test his thumb on Wednesday in hopes of playing for the 49ers (8-7) this week. The San Francisco team will face the Houston Texans and they will have a chance to secure their place in the playoffs.

“Christmas helped make me feel better, I would say,” Garoppolo said. It’s a torn ligament, so that’s what it is. Kind of a pain that follows you everywhere, so I know what it feels like. However, it’s just about being confident, presenting myself and being able to do what I normally do with the ball. We’ll see where that takes us, but I’m feeling pretty good right now with the injury. “

Garoppolo was injured in a sack in the second quarter but stayed in the game. He explained that his thumb injury played a major role in his second intercept of the game, which came on the first down of the third quarter. He was, however, able to adjust his throwing style afterwards.

Garoppolo completed five of seven passes for 91 yards, which led to a late-game tying touchdown before the 49ers lost 20-17.

“I played the whole game with the injury, so it’s just a matter of being able to grab the ball and do the things that I usually do,” he said. We’re going to test that out today, see how I feel and go from there. I nevertheless feel confident. “

If Garoppolo is unable to play, rookie Trey Lance would get his second start of the season. The 49ers traded three first-round picks to draft third-place Lance in April. Since leaving in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, he has only played five discounts as the fate of the games was sealed.

Lance completed 15 of his 29 passes for 192 yards, with one interception, in the 17-10 loss. He also ran 16 times for 89 yards. Lance injured his knee in that game and hasn’t thrown a pass since.
