Nations League draw: the worst case scenario for the Devils? With Germany and England

Three days after the Champions League draw fiasco, UEFA reopens its amphitheater in Nyon (Switzerland) for the Nations League. This time, no more software is needed to determine which opponents a particular team cannot face. All draws are possible between the different pots. But the system is no less complicated for the uninitiated. The 55 UEFA member nations are divided into four leagues (A, B, C, D), based on the results of the 2020-2021 edition.

In the pot 1

Some countries have therefore been relegated or promoted to the lower or upper league. Wales, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria, for example, join league A, taking the places of Iceland, Ukraine, Bosnia and Sweden who now play in league B. Sixteen teams are present in league A. Including Belgium, which takes advantage of its recent presence in the Final Four of the competition to appear in pot 1 of the draw. Just like France, Spain and Italy, which will therefore not be able to be the opponents of the Red Devils.

No easy draw

However, we should not rejoice too quickly. The other potential members of the group from Belgium are also formidable. Pot 2 brings together, for example, Portugal of Cristiano Ronaldo, the Netherlands of Virgil van Dijk and Memphis Depay, Denmark, which has just achieved an 18 out of 18 in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, and Germany, as impressive as ever. with his offensive armada.

Pot 3 can also hold some surprises since England is part of it, because of its 3rd place in the group in the last League of Nations (in the pool of Belgium). Just like the Poland of Robert Lewandowski, which despite everything seems the less upscale opponent of pot 3, which also includes Croatia and Switzerland.

Pot 4 includes Wales, which Belgium faced last month (1-1), but also Czechia, quarter-finalist at the Euro, Austria of Real Madrid defender David Alaba, as well as Hungary, which caused a lot of difficulties for France (1-1) and Germany (2-2) at the Euro.

It is therefore difficult to prefer one or the other opponent for the Devils. Even if inheriting from Germany and England appears to be the most delicate issue. Or, on the contrary, the most beneficial for the training of the selection of Roberto Martinez. The matches, scheduled for June and September 2022, will indeed allow good preparation for the World Cup in Qatar, at the end of 2022 …

Recall that Belgium was in the group of Switzerland and Iceland in 2018-2019, then Denmark, England and again Iceland during the 2020-2021 edition.
