Minnie Miñoso and Tony Oliva to the Hall of Fame

Cuban players Orestes Miñoso and Tony Oliva were elected this Sunday by the Veterans Committee to enter the Cooperstown Hall of Fame, MLB Español reported.

Orestes Miñoso or Minnie Miñoso, who passed away in 2015, was one of the first Latino superstars and the first black Hispanic to break the color barrier.

He played for the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators and St. Louis Cardinals, and was named to the All-Star Game nine times and drove in 1,225 runs.

For his part, Tony Oliva, a 83-year-old native of Pinar del Río, played with the Minnesota Twins throughout a career in which he led the American League in hits five times, in doubles four times and won three batting titles. as well as Rookie of the Year in 1964.

Oliva’s family disclosed on Twitter the celebrations that took place after the announcement made this Sunday.

Until now, Cuba had four players in the Hall of Fame: Tany Pérez, Martín Dihigo, José de la Caridad Méndez and Cristóbal Torriente. Also part of Cooperstown is the narrator and commentator Rafael “Felo” Ramírez.
