Mats Hummels’ successor plays for FC Bayern Munich

No, its time is far from over

Mats Hummels is world champion, six-time German champion and two-time DFB Cup winner. Of course, its time is far from over. He is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. And what are we talking about here anyway? At 32 you can still achieve a lot. The defensive duo Leonardo Bonucci (34) and Giorgio Chiellini (37) recently proved that when they led Italy to the European Championship.

Completely tactless, however, are the statements by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Dieter Hoeneß about Hummels’ performance.

At first, Hoeneß said himself that he got off a little too badly in the top game – which is correct. With two out of three goals he was just unlucky. But if you still conclude from one game that Hummels’ best time is over, that’s unfair. And then Hoeneß said: “Hummels is not getting any better.” What kind of statement is that? Yes, that’s right, Mr. Hoeneß. Because he’s already playing at the top level.

And even that which Rummenigge teased with can easily be invalidated. The fact that Hummels has problems when he goes into running duels is not, as Rummenigge thinks, due to age. Hummels has never been a speed player. He made up for his lack of speed ten years ago with outstanding game intelligence. And it has not changed until today.
