The elimination at the European Championship was hard. “You are never prepared to deal with such moments. That’s the reality. Our preparation for the European Championship was very strong. The dedication of every player and every staff member was ideal. Our preparation was a bit better than that for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Martinez speaks of the lack of luck. “Then the disappointment is greater. When you lack a bit of luck. It was difficult for me to accept the defeat at the European Championship against Italy. I didn’t think this generation deserved to lose that game like that.”
In the semi-finals of the Nations League, a 0-2 lead was given away against the French. “The Nations League was different. That was more anger. We gave up the game. At the same time, the goal was clear: we still had 12 months to solve the second half.”
“The first half was perfect and that makes you angry: we felt that we were not beaten by our opponent, but we lost the game. Then your responsibility will feel greater. But on the other hand, you see that the focus has to be in the next 12 months,” said Martinez.
