“Unfortunately, today I was attacked by four cowards, who injured me and tried to hurt my family,” Cancelo wrote on Instagram of his battered face. “When you fight back, this happens. They stole all my jewels.”
“After so many obstacles in my life, this is one more I will overcome,” said the Portuguese, who lost his mother in a car accident at the age of 18. Cancelo was then a passenger in the car.
Manchester City said in a statement that they were “shocked and appalled”. “Joao and his family are supported by the club. He is assisting the police in the investigation of this very serious matter.”
Cancelo has missed just one league game this season with Manchester City in the lead in the Premier League.
