Macarena Fernández from Almeria, double champion of Spain in badminton

The sport of Almeria is in luck. The achievement has come from the hand of the Mercapinturas badminton club, where the young woman from Almeria has been proclaimed champion of Spain under-15 in the modalities of women’s singles and doubles in the Pontevedra town of Ponteáreas.

The 14-year-old player Macarena Fernández, belonging to the Mercapinturas Almería club and the municipal sports school, attended the most important event of the season, together with her coach Juan Manuel Fernández, where she positioned herself as one of the favorites to win gold, especially in the individual modality where he started as seed number one, the result of the good work carried out during the season.

Finally, the Almeria was established in Pontevedra as the best player in Spain in her category, being the only one capable of making a double and made history by being the first time that a woman from Almeria achieves it, thus adding to the honor roll as Almeria champions after Joaquín Reina in 2011 and Belén Peña in 2016.

The Councilor for Sports, Juanjo Segura, has conveyed the “congratulations to Macarena and the club, after the success achieved in Pontevedra and, from Almería, we will support the youth team to continue growing sportily.”

Number one in the ranking

In this way, the young woman from Mercapinturas from Almeria put the finishing touch to a spectacular season, achieving the number one position in the Spanish ranking for the first time in her short sporting career. From the club, also, stand out the ‘doublet’ in the Andalusian championship, as well as his first international medals (a bronze, three silvers and his great gold in the Bulgarian international).

His coach, Juan Manuel Fernández Quiles, has highlighted the fact that, in his second season as a club coach, his player Macarena has achieved this title, and all of those achieved, provides “a special feeling, since it has meant an effort of many months together preparing the appointment with limited resources unlike their rivals where the majority belong to technology centers ”. The next challenges are already marked in red on the calendar such as the 2023 European Championship in the U-17 category.
