Inés Bergua, Gabriel Torralba, Maria Laborda and Daniel Osanz, the best Aragonese athletes of the years 2019 and 2020 – Sports

The young María Laborda and Daniel Osanz have been recognized as the best Aragonese athletes of 2020 at the XXIII Aragonese Sports Gala held this Friday at the Superior Conservatory of Music of Aragón. During the gala, the prizes corresponding to 2019 were also handed out –the event had to be canceled due to the pandemic–, which have gone to the gymnast Inés Bergua and the cyclist Gabriel Torralba. The President of Aragon, Javier Lambán, accompanied by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Felipe Faci, has attended this event, which recognizes the merits of the sportsmen of the land and serves as a meeting point between the different actors in the sector.

Aragon has managed to position itself in mountain sports thanks to names such as María Laborda and Daniel Osanz. Laborda holds the women’s national record in speed climbing, and has been selected for the absolute of this sport. Likewise, she is the champion of Aragon of the sub-18 block in Huesca, as well as of the School Games in the Youth category, and won the title of the V Open Ciudad de Huesca, in the absolute category. In the case of Osanz, he has made a place in the mountain race, achieving the feat of ascending the Garmo Negro in just 59 minutes, setting a new national record. This young man, a member of the Spanish mountain racing team, was champion of Spain under 23 KV and cross by teams under 23, as well as national runner-up in the absolute category of KV.

The year 2019 was a year of success for Inés Bergua, a member of the Spanish national gymnastics team at the CAR in Madrid, with whom she achieved second place in the International Tournament “Aphrodite Cup” in Athens (Greece), fourth place in the European Championship in Baku (Azerbaijan) and another fourth in the World Championship in Moscow (Russia). On the other hand, Gabriel Torralba is a master of the two wheels, as evidenced by his title of U23 Cycling Champion of Spain and a bronze medal in the absolute category. Torralba also took fourth place in the Trans-Nomad and seventh in the Nations Trophy alongside Team Spain.
In this reference event in Aragonese sport, tribute has been paid to the former basketball player Pilar Valero, a hundred times international with the national team and considered the best basket player of all time. Javier Lambán has presented the 2020 Sports Legend Honor Award to this athlete of innate talent and impeccable career, who has been collected in her name by her brother Sergio.

The other great honoree of the afternoon was that the Real Zaragoza soccer team that won the Cup Winners’ Cup in Paris in 1995, the 2019 Sports Legend Honor Award. Lambán presented the award to the blue and white team that changed the history of the team hand in the last second of extra time against Arsenal, with a Vaseline from almost midfield.

The president congratulated all the winners and thanked them for bearing the name of Aragon throughout the world with their successes. It has also recognized the efforts of clubs, federations and athletes to continue training and working during this health crisis, which forced the suspension of competitions until last February. Lambán has underlined the commitment of the regional Executive with the Aragonese sport and with the federations that compose it.

Likewise, the Aragonese president has highlighted the importance of youth sports and the development of the Sports Games in School Age, which this year celebrates its 39th edition and has valued the level of sports facilities in the Community, which has favored progression of our elite athletes. The Government of Aragon promotes a program of sports technification classrooms, which serves so that young elite athletes can reconcile their academic and sports training. Almost 200 Aragonese students are embraced by this formula, with which they are already reaping great sporting successes.

Finally, the Aragonese president has emphasized the 2030 objective as a key moment, since the celebration of the Winter Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cup is on the horizon, events in which our Community and the Aragonese capital choose To have a great role and to bring them to fruition, every effort is being made. For this reason, Lambán has wished that in this same gala, in 2031, winter athletes and new values ​​of football could be awarded, and a Real Zaragoza in the elite.

The president recalled that Aragon is a land of talent, with a vocation for excellence and universality also in sport, as this XXIII Aragonese Sports Gala has shown.

Among the winners, in addition to the best athletes, also highlight the awards received by Teresa Santolaria, Roberto Dieste “Berti”, Luis Masgrau, Sariñena City Council, TuHuesca, Loreto Gracia, Alexey Roshchyn, among others.
