Goodbye to Sam Jones, 10-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics

A sad news closes 2021 for the world of basketball that lost overnight Sam Jones, historical player of the Boston Celtics and ten-time NBA champion. Jones disappeared overnight at the age of 88. “Another of my closest friends is missing,” wrote Cedric Maxwell, another great former Celtics. “RIP to another North Carolina native, a legendary player, a 10 time champion with our Celtics and a wonderful person.”

Jones played in the NBA from 1957 to 1969, always wearing the Boston Celtics jersey with which he won 10 rings (1959–1966, 1968, 1969). 5 times NBA All-Star, his number 24 was withdrawn by the Celtics. Jones is the only player in NBA history, along with former teammate Bill Rusell (11), to have won 10 or more NBA rings. In 2021 he was also inducted into the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

“Just looking at the championships they have won and what he has done is obviously a big loss for the community here,” said Celtics head coach Ime Udoka.
