Glories in a challenging year ›Sports› Granma

The year 2021 had its greatest competitive commitment at the Tokyo Olympics, and the planning of the 69 Cuban athletes who took part in the summer event in the Japanese capital was designed towards that goal.

The results, both in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, reflected that the Greater Antilles retains the world leading role in a group of sports (boxing, wrestling and athletics), while progress has been made in other disciplines (canoeing , beach volleyball and sports shooting).

If there is one thing that has led to the relevant actions of the Island in this and other important scenarios, it has been disagreement. That is why it is known that it is necessary to make modifications to rescue sports that have experienced a decline in their contributions to the medal table, such as judo, baseball or volleyball.

Although there are many glories in a challenging year like 2021, not only the medals express that a good job has been done. Andrea Becali’s national marks in the Short Course Swimming World Cup reflect a renaissance, as they are results dating back 20 years; the own classification of Daniela Fonseca and Jorge Moisés Campos, in table tennis, was a resounding success that took them to the Japanese championship; Ludia Montero also moved to lift a sixth place in the Olympic weightlifting, the best in those concerts by a Cuban woman, or the third place for teams of chess players in the World Championship for the Disabled.

It is not done for a medal or for a record, but one of the most precious titles of the Cuban sports movement was accompanying, with its doctors, its facilities and its teachers, the fight against the pandemic; These doctors, nurses and paramedics, together with the scientists and technicians of the Anti-Doping Laboratory, also ensured the optimal state of the biomedical parameters of the preparation processes for the demanding competitive levels.

The year 2022 will bring new challenges, but the joys and hopes in search of victory will accompany Cuban athletes in every endeavor.
