Former Girona player Manuel Jiménez, “Filomatic”, dies at 78

The world of football fired Manuel Jiménez Otero this weekend, a former player of Girona, Barça and Celta who died on Sunday at the age of 78. Jiménez was a prominent figure in the late sixties and early seventies when Barça caught Badajoz in 1968. An injury prevented him from shining at the Camp Nou, but he did make a career at Celta de Vigo, with whom he rose to First and played in the UEFA Cup with outstanding numbers. In 1975, Girona joined him as a star signing, but after playing a game in Villena, the next day the Achilles tendon broke during the warm-up before facing Lleida. He would no longer play for Girona and would retire.

Jiménez was popularly known by Filomatic because of his resemblance to comedian Miguel Gila, who had starred in a very popular advertisement for this razor at the time.
