Football: Bitter bankruptcy for Liverpool in Leicester

Soccer

Liverpool have lost touch with leaders Manchester City in the English Premier League. The “Reds” suffered a bitter 1-0 defeat at Leicester City on Tuesday evening and are still second six points behind the leader after 19 games. Chelsea are third with equal points.

Leicester returned to winning ways, mainly thanks to an outstanding goalie Kasper Schmeichel, and made it to ninth place. The Danish goalie saved a penalty from striker Mohamed Salah in the 16th minute and continued to show strong saves.

If ex-Salzburger Sadio Mane had the best chance he would have been beaten, the offensive player shot over it from eleven meters (55th). The match winner for the home side was Ademola Lookman in the 59th minute, a “Joker”. For Liverpool it was the second loss of points in the league in a row after a 2-2 loss at Tottenham, and the first defeat after ten unbeaten competitive games.

Southampton draws outnumbered

Previously, Southampton had expanded the undefeated series in the league to three games. The “Saints” coached by Styrian Ralph Hasenhüttl fought 1-1 (1: 1) against Tottenham at St. Mary’s Stadium. James Ward-Prowse (25th) put Southampton in the front, Harry Kane (41st) equalized with a penalty before the break.

Although Southampton’s defender Mohammed Salisu had seen the traffic light card (39th) shortly before, the Hasenhüttl team brought the draw over time. That was also because the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) prevented a brace from Kane and took back his second goal in the game (53rd). Southampton is in league 13th with 21 points, Tottenham nine points ahead of sixth.

Watford is no use dream start

On the other hand, things went further downhill in the 20th lap for Watford. With ÖFB team goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann, the team of coach Claudio Ranieri scored a home 1: 4 (1: 2) against West Ham United and thus the fifth defeat in a row. Watford got off to a dream start thanks to a lightning strike from Emmanuel Dennis (4th), but fell on the losing track due to a double strike by the guests.

Bachmann suffered the fifth defeat in a row

Tomas Soucek (27th) and Said Benrahma (29th) gave Bachmann no defense. After the break, Mark Noble (58th / penalty) and “Joker” Nikola Vlasic (92nd) made it 4-1. For West Ham it was a break after five competitive games without a win with four defeats. West Ham climbed past the “Spurs” to fifth, Watford is only 17 in the league with 13 points.

Next postponement due to coronavirus

In the Premier League, the next game is canceled due to numerous positive coronavirus cases. The match between Everton and Newcastle United on Thursday (8.30 p.m.) had to be postponed from Tuesday evening, according to the Liverpool club. It is already the 16th Premier League game that had to be canceled due to positive coronavirus cases within a club in the past three weeks.
