Ex-Rapidler Hugo Maradona is dead

Less than a year after his brother Diego, Hugo Maradona has now also died – at the age of only 52 of a heart attack.

Hugo Maradona is a household name for Austrian football fans, as he played for Rapid in the 1990/91 season. However, due to a knee injury, he only made three appearances for the Hütteldorfer under coach Hans Krankl.

Hugo Maradona was acquired by SSC Napoli, his brother’s club, who died in November 2020, in 1987 at the age of 18 and played a single game for the southern Italians before moving to Ascoli on loan.

He continued his career at Rayo Vallecano and Rapid before returning to Italy. In the Austrian league he only made three appearances. As a player, Hugo Maradona was also involved in Japan and Canada.

As a coach, he later looked after amateur teams from the Campania region.

Hugo Maradona leaves behind his wife and three children. “He led a healthy life and was still active in the world of football,” his lawyer Angelo Pisani told Italian media.

In the last local elections in Naples in October, Maradona was offered a candidacy together with the mayoral candidate Catello Maresca, which he did not accept. Among other things because of problems with the Italian citizenship, which he had not yet acquired.

Hugo was the younger of the world star’s two brothers. The third member is Raul Maradona, who is 55 years old today. He also played football professionally.
