EM – Football plays for national championship against BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif .– The State of Florida plays for its third national soccer title today at 8 p.m. ET. The Seminoles take on the BYU Cougars on ESPNU with Jenn Hildreth and Julie Foudy on call.

Florida State qualified for its third national championship in the past four years on Friday after defeating No.5 Rutgers. The Seminoles’ semi-final record improved to 5-6-1, leading them to their sixth league game in program history. Friday’s game marked the number 13 shutout of the season, with the Seminoles beating their opponents 66-13. Noles’ all-time NCAA tournament record improved to 71-18-5. Florida State now ranks second in the country for all-time NCAA tournament wins, behind North Carolina.

The Garnet and Gold have qualified for the College Cup for the 12th time in program history after defeating No.9 Michigan 1-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Noles earned seven straight wins with the ACC tournament victory over No.25 Wake Forest. During that streak, FSU beat six ranked teams, including five shutout wins.

In their last 10 games of the NCAA tournament, the Garnet and Gold have recorded seven shutouts. The Noles have allowed just three goals in 987 minutes, for a goals against average of 0.27. Cristina Roque started in goal for each of those 10 games, recording 17 saves.

Florida State entered the NCAA tournament as the number one seed. This is the 10th time in the history of the school that the Seminoles have been named the No. 1 seed and the fourth consecutive season. It is also the 17th consecutive season and the 18th overall that the State of Florida has received a national seed for the NCAA tournament.
