The Dutch Esther Verhees made a beach walk on Vlieland, one of the Wadden Islands, together with her partner. There, the two found a washed up football with the inscription “Dundee Athletic”.
The woman went looking on the internet and came across the Facebook page of the Scottish amateur club. She posted a photo of her find asking if they missed a ball, the beginning of a viral story.
“It’s unbelievable,” Dundee manager Matt Smith told the Daily Record. “Two weeks ago, one of our defenders kicked the ball too hard during a game and the football flew into the river.”
“That happens often. Usually those balls wash up a few kilometers away and they are taken by children playing. I have never experienced such a football bobbing to another country. We have already laughed a lot about it.”
The finders of the ball had normally been to Scotland themselves, but in the last resort opted for a trip to Vlieland due to the travel restrictions. “We couldn’t come to Scotland, so Scotland came to us,” laughs Esther Verhees.
