Deborah Gravenstijn

Dibora Monick Olga „Deborah“ Gravenstijn (Born August 20, 1974 in Tholen) is a former Dutch judoka. She is a five-time Dutch champion and a two-time Olympic medalist.

Gravenstijn started judo at the age of five. She mastered her international breakthrough in 1992 when she won the European Junior Championship in the class up to 61 kilograms. Six years later she won a national championship title for the first time in the Netherlands. She also successfully continued her career outside of the country’s borders. Between 1998 and 2002 she stood on the podium five times in a row at the European Judo Championships, winning a silver medal and four bronze medals. In 2001 she became vice world champion in the class up to 57 kilograms in Munich.

She made her debut at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, where she was fifth in the weight class up to 52 kilograms. Four years later at the Games in Athens she won the bronze medal in the class up to 57 kilograms, but had to cancel her participation in the World Championships the following year due to an injury.

In 2008 Gravenstijn took part in the Olympic Games for the third time and won the silver medal in the class up to 57 kilograms after losing to the Italian Giulia Quintavalle in the final.

Gravenstijn is a member of the Dutch Air Force and serves there with the rank of First Lieutenant.
