Davis Cup: Renewed captains until 2024, Grosjean and Benneteau will have more responsibilities

“I am particularly happy and proud for our Federation of this renewed team, which carries a new ambition for Roland-Garros with Amélie Mauresmo, and a desire stronger than ever with our two captains to prepare and win the French teams during the big appointments that await us, until 2024“, affirmed Moretton while pointing the horizon of the Olympic Games in Paris.

After a very difficult year for French tennis, especially in the Grand Slam, the task promises to be immense for Grosjean and Benneteau who have expressed their gratitude and assured the FFT of their total commitment. In fact, their role should take on a new dimension. With the recent reforms of the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup, they have only recently been visible in action on their bench during the finals of both competitions, whereas previously four rallies (in case of a final) punctuated the year. To counterbalance this evolution, more monitoring of players and feedback on performance will now be required.

“With the DTN Nicolas Escudé and the captains, we are in a three-year logic until Paris 2024. We do not want our captains to be just captains at one point in the year, but that they be involved in the preparation. We want them to be on all the Grand Slams, to go see the juniors too, for there to be a trade. There will be a 2024 performance unit with regular exchanges, gatherings, internships. We want the role of captain to take on this magnitude. There is a little state of emergency at the top of French tennis“, considered Amélie Oudéa-Castera.

Grosjean and Escudé will therefore be stakeholders in the FFT revival project so that this slack period in terms of results lasts as short as possible. Note that the Blues have not won any Olympic medal since the London Games in 2012 (silver and bronze in men’s doubles). In Paris, a new zero point would be unwelcome, Grosjean and Benneteau therefore have their work cut out for them.
