Contract with national coach Gislason extended until 2024

Alfred Gislason is to remain the national coach of the German national team until at least 2024. The Icelander and the German Handball Federation (DHB) agreed on Wednesday before Christmas Eve to extend the current contract until the end of February 2022. The new term includes the 2023 World Cup in Poland and Sweden, the 2024 European Championship in Germany and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“I am delighted that, after the good talks I had from the start, I can continue on the path with the national team,” said Gislason: “We have achieved a lot in the past few months. I am sure that the further development of the currently very young and still inexperienced team will give us a lot of pleasure. The prerequisite is that we have time for this journey. “

Gislason was promoted to office in March 2020 as the successor to Christian Prokop. “With all his experience, he fits in very well with the rebuilding of our national team,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann: “This new and young formation will be able to use such an experienced coach as a rock in the surf.” “Clearly in favor of a contract extension”.

The 62-year-old Alfred Gislason is one of the most successful handball coaches in the world. With SC Magdeburg and THW Kiel he was a total of seven German champions and won the Champions League three times.

With the German national team, he got off to a bumpy start in pandemic times. At the World Cup in Egypt in January 2021, the national team finished twelfth with the worst result in the association’s history. At the Olympics in Tokyo, Germany failed in the quarter-finals to Egypt. The next goal for Gislason and the national team is the upcoming European Championships in Slovakia and Hungary (January 13th to 30th).
