Genk and Bruges played a real cup match this Wednesday in the round of 16 and it was the Bruges residents who emerged victorious on penalties. If Brugge opened the scoring through Balanta, Genk equalized and then led 2-1 thanks to Thorsvedt and Paintsil. The Brugeois then equalized on a header from De Ketelaere but were again surprised by Paintsil just two minutes after the equalizer. But Brugge had the resources to snatch extra time with a new goal from De Ketelaere’s header just minutes from time.

A few days after facing each other in the league, Genk and Bruges find themselves in the round of 16 of the Belgian Cup.

And the match doesn’t take long to start. Libra tries his luck from afar and opens the scoring with a nice cannon shot (7th).

Bongonda is hooked by Eye in the Bruges rectangle. The referee of the match does not flinch and does not point to the penalty spot (21st).

But Genk does not let go and equalizes by Thorstvedt. The Norwegian played on the Bruges defense and rolled his shot low to the ground at the far post. Mignolet is beaten (29th).

Bongonda launched in the back of the defense and is presented in front of Mignolet. Altruistic, the Genkois gives the ball to Paintsil which pushes the ball to the bottom of the empty goal (45 + 2). Genk takes the advantage just before returning to the locker room.

How during the week, Bruges, led 2-1, turns the situation around. Rich center of the left and Charles De Ketelaere throws himself to the far post to propel the ball to the back of the net with his head (69th).

Unlike the weekend game, it was Genk who took the advantage and led 3-2. Paintsil goes alone to goal on a deflection in pigeon wing of Bongonda and adjusts Mignolet at the near post (71st).

Vanaken center at the far post and it is once again Charles De Ketelaere who is at the far post and equalizes with a header (89th). Qualification will therefore be played in extra time.

In these overtime the two teams surrender but fail to score even if Bruges seems better in the match than in the first 90 minutes. The decision will therefore be made on penalties.

Bas Dost is the first to come forward and calmly takes Vandevoordt against the grain. Hrosovsky takes the option of shooting in the middle, Mignolet has not moved and stops sending it.

De Ketelaere in turn takes the Geneva goalkeeper against the odds, Bruges leads 0-2. Lucumi opens his foot and, even if Mignolet started from the right side, scores his shot on goal, 1-2.

Mats Rits shoots in exactly the same spot as Lucumi and the sentence is there, despite Vandevoordt’s good dive. Bongonda scored his shot very quietly in the middle of the goal, 2-3.

Brugge continues their perfect session thanks to Ricca who crosses his shot and takes Vandevoordt on the wrong foot. Thorstvedt cheeked it very coolly and opened his foot, Mignolet didn’t budge, 3-4.

Noa Lang does not tremble and sends Bruges to the quarterfinals with a beautiful cross strike.
