The first Bundesliga meeting between Amos Pieper and Luca Kilian was one of the beautiful sides of the game against 1. FC Köln, after which Arminia’s central defender again mourned the missed opportunities.

It was a long-run reunion. Theoretically, the possibility of facing each other in a Bundesliga match had existed for over a year, namely since the rise of Bielefeld. But it wasn’t until last Saturday’s game that the two central defenders, Arminias Amos Pieper and Luca Kilian from 1. FC Köln, actually faced each other in the Bundesliga for the first time.

“I also had to remember that it finally worked out against each other on the field,” said Pieper afterwards about Kilian, who initially had a difficult time in Mainz after moving from Paderborn, but now under his old foster father Steffen Baumgart found the team in Cologne. “We wished each other all the best for the game beforehand and also had a short chat afterwards,” continued Pieper. “We had a very nice time together in Dortmund. I’m glad for him that things are going so well now.”

At BVB, the two once won the German A-Junior Championship together against FC Bayern in 2017 and converted their shots in the necessary penalty shoot-out. Past! Pieper: “Later on it might be nice to see that we made it into the Bundesliga. Of course, you don’t think of that sort of thing in a game. It’s about our situation and our points.”

It would be a bit more indifferent to us if we hadn’t had the feeling more often this season that there was more.

And Pieper has every reason to be dissatisfied. Despite a lot of effort and a reasonable performance, his Bielefeld team only managed a partial success against Cologne in a 1-1 draw. “It would be a bit more indifferent to us if we hadn’t had the feeling more often this season that there was more in it. Then it’s bitter that we never got three points,” said the 23-year-old, recalling previous home games like against Frankfurt (1: 1), Hoffenheim (0: 0) and Wolfsburg (2: 2) with a similar course.

Arminia feels eight points short

Including the Cologne game, there are now eight points missing – with a total of 18 points, Arminia would be in a solid midfield position in the table. Yet. “It doesn’t help to doubt and brood about everything now, but we have to make the construct even more stable,” demands Pieper, who remains confident. “I’m very optimistic. Except for the results, we started the season well and stable, with refreshing football. We shouldn’t think about it, but keep going, scoring goals, maybe even playing to zero once and seeing what was good . ”
