Argentine football, in mourning: Diego Armando Montiel, former Atlético de Rafaela player, died

The club Rafaela athletic announced this Sunday the death of Diego Armando Montiel, 25, who had come to play in the first class with the colors of the Rafael company.

Montiel, who worked as a midfielder, had played for Celeste in the lower divisions and in the first division between 2012 and 2019. He had also appeared in Juventud Unida de Gualeguaychú and in Bragado FC.

Montiel died this Sunday of meningitis. The player was admitted on Saturday to the intensive care room of the San Juan Bautista hospital, in Santo Tomé, his hometown, and could not overcome a too advanced picture of the disease.

He had debuted in 2014 in the highest category with the Atlético Rafaela shirt, and in that same year he scored a goal against River at the Nuevo Monumental, in a match for date 13 of the Transition Tournament.

Montiel started in Independiente de Santo Tome, and from there he went to the youth divisions of Atlético de Rafaela, a club with which he made his debut in Primera. He played 33 games in the First Division, with one goal scored, the one mentioned against River, in what was his first match as a starter with the Crema jacket.

Later he was transferred to Juventud Unida de Gualeguaychú, with whom he played the First National tournament. There he participated in eleven games and scored a goal, against Deportivo Morón. After that loan, he returned to Rafaela, but with fewer appearances, and then went on to play the Federal Regional Amateur for Bragado FC.
