HALOYOUTH – Former Olympic champion Rexy Mainaky is playing for a bigger role after being appointed director of the doubles sector.
The 53-year-old Indonesian badminton player, who returned to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for his second stint, was initially hired as deputy coaching director for Wong Choong Hann.
However, as a result of yesterday’s reshuffle of coaching and training, seeing Rexy Mainaky as a prodigious talent, he was promoted exactly four weeks after he reported for duty on December 1.
However, even though Rexy was appointed as the managing director of the doubles department, he has more responsibilities than Choong Hann, considering that he oversees three sectors at once namely men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles with six coaches and 32 players under his responsibility.

Receiving this big responsibility, Rexy doesn’t mind because he has a lot of experience, having previously served as supremo for the Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines national teams.
“I have a difficult task, but I look forward to working with Choong Hann and Datuk Kenny (Goh) to make all the necessary changes to improve the team,” said Rexy.
Rexy is optimistic that he can bring Malaysia to win various world tournaments if all the ranks under him are willing to follow his directions properly.
“With good communication and teamwork, we were able to make this new structure work,” he said
