Abraham Ancer leads the Hero World Challenge after first round

MIAMI

With a card of six under par, the Mexican golfer Abraham Ancer placed in the shared leadership of the Bahamas Hero World Challenge tournament after the first round on Thursday.

Two other players, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and American Daniel Berger also signed 66 strokes to be at the forefront of this event, in which 20 players compete by invitation.

Ancer, number 12 in the world ranking, made birdies on the third and seventh holes before closing the first part of the round with a bogey on the Albany resort course.

Subsequently the Mexican, born in McAllen (Texas), added another five birdies in the last nine holes.

A very solid round. Very happy with everything. The best thing was definitely the putting, “said Ancer, who won his first title on the PGA tour last August in Memphis.

For his part, McIlroy, winner of four Grand Slam tournaments, finished with an eagle, six birdies and a double bogey. The former world number one, who is regaining his level after his disappointing performance in the Ryder Cup, is playing in this tournament for the first time since 2013.

Just one shot behind the leading trio are Americans Webb Simpson, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas.

The number two in the world ranking, the American Collin Morikawa, is in the seventh shared position, two blows to the head.

The event, in which 17 of the 25 best golfers in the world participate, was not played in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic. The Swedish Henrik Stenson, from his position 179, defends the crown that he won in 2019.

The Spanish Jon Rahm and the American Dustin Johnson, numbers one and three of the PGA, do not compete in this event.
