2nd league! Because of Omikron: New worries at Erzgebirge Aue – 2nd Bundesliga

“We will not give up, but will fight with all our might to stay in the league in the new year.”

Aue managing director Michael Voigt (49) has not lost his optimism. Although FC Erzgebirge goes into the Christmas break with only 14 points, Voigt still firmly believes in the rescue.

But new problems are already emerging. The virus variant Omikron and the threatening political measures make it difficult for the club to plan specific things for the coming weeks and months.

Should even stricter contact restrictions be decided, a return of viewers from January is illusory. That would be problematic for the relegation-threatened second division club for several reasons.

Voigt: “On the one hand, we are missing the fans as the twelfth man. That was clearly noticeable in the last home games. With the supporters behind us, we would certainly not have lost all three games against Darmstadt, Dresden and Nuremberg. On the other hand, ghost games mean a lack of income again. The effects would be enormous. ”

The club is threatened with millions in losses if the ranks remain empty. If the stadium is sold out, Aue will take around 430,000 euros, and if it is half full, more than 200,000 euros. If the season continues with ghost games in January, Voigt expects help from politicians: “Then we hope that, as in the 3rd division, at least the ticket cancellations will be reimbursed.”
