Why the World Cup in Qatar is a question of attitude

Dhe last qualifying game was lost for the Danes on Monday in Glasgow, but it was already clear: Denmark would go to the World Cup, to Qatar. Among the Europeans, only the Germans had gained the right to do so more quickly. In the middle of this week, however, the Dansk Boldspil Union, the Danish football association, made it clear that the Scandinavians will approach the journey to the World Cup, which begins in exactly one year, on November 21, 2022, quite differently than German football -Bund is known so far.

The sponsors of the DBU, a bank and the state Toto company Dansk Spil, forego their advertising space on the players’ training clothing during the World Cup in Qatar in favor of “critical messages”, as stated in a DBU press release. At the same time, the association announced that it would minimize the number of association representatives traveling from Denmark in order to make it clear that the Danish association is concerned with the sporting success of the team “and not with advertising for events organized by the World Cup organizers”.

Toxic World Cup tournament in Qatar

A year before the start, a World Cup participant and his sponsors consider the tournament in Qatar to be so toxic that they do not want to associate themselves with it in the usual way. This has never happened before in this form. How many copycats will the Danes find?

In view of the difficulties that FC Bayern Munich has to deal with a dispute about the side effects of the Qatari prosperity in its form as a platinum sponsor of the German soccer champions in the formats stipulated by association law, it will be interesting to see when the German balancing act between criticism and anticipation probably too tight.

And outside of Europe? The vast majority of World Cup participants will be looking with shining eyes at the impressive infrastructure that Qatar’s rulers have put in the sands of his emirate. FIFA, on the other hand, recognized the UN guidelines on business and human rights five years ago and this week Amnesty International called on it, among other things, to “urgently report on the measures that were taken during 2020/2021 to address the To fulfill obligations to WM service staff in connection with the WM ”.
