QUESTIONS
Can you repeat it? In his 30-year-old season, Semien surpassed his previous homer peak by 12 and his expected slugging (.444) was 100 points lower than his true mark.

Semien has played every game in each of his last two 162-game seasons. Whit Merrifield, who has not missed a single game since 2018, is the only one to have appeared in all 162 games of the last two full seasons.

Semien was called up for the second time in his career to the All-Star Game in 2021. Then, he took off in September, when he detonated 12 homers in the final month of the season.

The number of home runs he hit shouldn’t prevent him from being seen as a complete player. His seven Above Average Outs as a second baseman, according to Statcast, placed him sixth for the position. According to Fangraphs, Semien’s base run was 4.0 runs better than average.

Semien had his worst numbers during the shortened 2020 season. He hit just seven homers and had 0.3 WAR in 53 games for Oakland. It was a tough year for everyone, but for Semien it was particularly difficult.

He confessed to The Athletic (subscription required) last June that his wife suffered an abortion during the 2019-2020 campaign break. The pandemic forced him to train at home rather than at the Oakland Coliseum, and his position in the union distracted him from his work on the ground. Additionally, he dealt with an intercostal injury for half the year.

It seems like a good idea for pitchers to change their plan against Semien in 2022. The gunner was one of the most productive hitters in the league against the fastballs last season. He had 119 hits off that pitching (third-most in MLB) and slugged .620 (17th-best).
