Unicaja has decided to pay a well-deserved tribute to the figure of Alfonso Queipo de Llano with the imposition of the Gold Badge, the highest distinction awarded by the entity and which will be held at halftime of the Champions League match against Nhizny Novgorod, the Wednesday, December 15. This meeting will be a great celebration of Malaga basketball, because it will also be attended by players and coaches from all the base basketball clubs in the province.

In this scenario, and in front of friends, colleagues, family and the Malaga fans, Queipo de Llano will receive a tribute that will culminate with the imposition of the insignia by the club’s president, Antonio Jesús López Nieto. It must be remembered that Alfonso Queipo de Llano is a fundamental man in the history of Malaga basketball since its inception. Since the 1950s, he has been an active part of the first steps in our sport that led to the creation of the Caja de Ronda Sports Society, the seed of today’s Unicaja.

In the 60s and 70s he contributed, also as a protector, to the growth of clubs such as Ademar, CD Málaga, El Palo Sports Center, Guadaljaire and, along with other historical figures of our basketball, was fundamental at the launch point of this sport in Malaga, which was to convince the financial institution to start the longest-running sponsorship of a ‘basketball’ club in Europe. This is how Caja de Ronda was created, a team of which Queipo de Llano was the coach for the first three seasons and to which he remained linked as a leader until 1992.

As a player, coach or leader, he has been a key man in the development of our club and basketball in our city but also at the national level since he was one of the founders of the Association of Basketball Clubs (ACB) in 1981 and He has to his credit numerous recognitions and awards throughout his career.
