Turkey: 94th minute goal against Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe supporter dies of heart attack

A supporter of the Turkish football team Fenerbahçe died on Sunday, suffering from a heart attack after his club’s winning goal scored in stoppage time in the Istanbul derby against Galatasaray, the news agency reported on Monday Turkish DHA.

Quickly led 1-0 at Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe equalized in the 31st minute thanks to Mesüt Özil. But the denouement came in the dying seconds of the match, in the 94th minute, with a cross strike from Fenerbahçe’s Portuguese midfielder Miguel Crespo.

“He couldn’t stand this excitement”

Ahmet Uysal, 60, was in the cafe run by his nephew in Alasehir (west), a town about 100 kilometers from Izmir. According to DHA, the sexagenarian, “Fanatique de Fenerbahce”, exulted during the second goal of his team before collapsing. Taken to hospital, the supporter died despite the intervention of doctors.

“When Fenerbahçe, whom he loved so much, scored in stoppage time, my uncle collapsed to the ground. He couldn’t stand the excitement.“, said his nephew, Ercan Uysal, according to remarks reported by the Turkish agency.

Fenerbahçe, who hasn’t won a league game since October 3, now sits fifth in the table with 23 points in 13 games, seven points behind leaders Trabzonspor. Galatasaray (21 pts) is 8th ahead of Besiktas (20 pts), the third big club in Istanbul.
