● 1895. The Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, creator of dynamite, signs his will, in which he states that his fortune must finance an award designed to recognize achievements in five categories: chemistry, physics, medicine, literature and preservation of peace. ● 1942. Jimi Hendrix, one of the most influential guitarists in history, was born in Seattle. Together with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he shook the rock of the 60s when he released the album Are You Experienced? in 1967. He was one of the artists who played at Woodstock in August 1969. He died in London in 1970: ingested barbiturates and choked on his own vomit. He is part of the group of rock stars who died at the age of 27 between the late 60s and early 70s, along with Brian Jones, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.
● 1955. Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, famous for his orchestral work, dies at 63 Pacific 231, inspired by the sound of a train locomotive. The oratorio also stands out in its production Joan of Arc.
● 1970. Bolivian painter Benjamin Mendoza y Amor attacks Pope Paul VI in Manila, seconds after he got off the plane that had taken him to the capital of the Philippines. Disguised as a priest, he rushes on the Pontiff and stabs him in the chest with a dagger, causing little serious injury. The bishops surrounding the Pope reduce the aggressor. Later he will say that he did not want to kill him, that he wanted to make a surrealist work of art. Convicted of attempted murder, he returned to Bolivia shortly thereafter and died in 2014.
● 1978. Harvey Milk, the first gay activist to reach public office in American politics, is assassinated along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. Another civil servant, Dan White, kills them with bullets, after having left his post and not being readmitted when he wanted to return to public service. ● 1983. A Boeing 787 traveling from Paris to Madrid crashes minutes before landing at Barajas airport. 181 people die and there are eleven survivors. Among the fatal victims are five figures who had traveled to France for the First Encounter of Hispano-American Culture: the Uruguayan literary critic Ángel Rama, the Peruvian writer Manuel Scorza, the Mexican writer Jorge Ibargüengoitia, the Argentine art critic Marta Traba and the pianist Spanish Rosa Sabater.
● 2011. At the age of 101, Eugenia Priest of Lustig dies. She was born in Turin and was the cousin of the Nobel Prize winner Rita Levi-Montalcini, who also died a hundred years old. He emigrated to Argentina due to fascism. She researched polio and traveled to learn about Jonas Salk’s vaccine in 1956. Upon her return, she vaccinated her children and also inoculated herself in public to convince society of the benefits of the vaccine. She was a researcher at Conicet and worked at the Malbrán Institute.
● 2016. The ultimate dream of Argentine tennis comes true by winning the Davis Cup. In a memorable final, the national team turns the series around against Croatia in Zagreb.
