The dream of two Catalans at the World Handball Championship

BarcelonaThe Women’s Handball World Cup kicks off this Wednesday in Torrevieja with the debut of the host team, Spain, against Argentina (9pm). The national team is the current world runner-up after losing the final two years ago, in 2019, in Japan against the Dutch. Spain is home to the tournament for the first time, with three venues in the Valencian Country (Llíria, Castellón and Torrevieja) and the Granollers Olympic pavilion. The team led by José Ignacio Prades has two Catalan players: Eli Cesáreo and Kaba Gassama. And one of them, Gassama, started playing precisely in the city of Vallès, where handball is a sport with a long tradition.

Kaba Gassama is the third of four brothers from a Senegalese family who arrived in Granollers years ago. And the Gassama have made sport their life. In fact, his older brother Sekou is a professional footballer and plays for Malaga, on loan from Valladolid. Sekou has played for many Catalan clubs, such as Sant Andreu and Badalona, ​​before being able to succeed, as does his brother Mamadou, in this case at the Sporting Club de Portugal. Now Mamadou plays handball, and this year he has left for Lisbon after a lot of seasons at Fraikin Granollers. The younger sister, Kaba, also trained in the lower categories of the Granollers club, where she played as a pivot. After making his debut in the first team of BM Granollers, with which he came to play international competitions, he signed two years ago for the French Neptunes Nantes, from where he jumped to the Fleury Loiret, also French. Gassama is confident of “being able to play in Granollers” – “in front of my people”, he says – as Spain plays this group stage in Torrevieja, against Argentina, China and Austria. The top two finishers in each group They will play a second group stage, and the whole final phase, from the quarter-finals to the final, will be in Granollers from December 15 to 19. “We want to fight for medals and get the World Cup to promote our sport ”Says Gassama.

The second Catalan player is Eli Cesáreo, born 22 years ago in Sant Joan Despí. Olympic at the last Tokyo Games, the Catalan plays in the Basque Bera-Bera, where she has won two leagues. Cesáreo, in fact, was already in the Spanish team that was a handful of glory at the World Cup two years ago in Japan, where he returned to participate in the Olympics. The first matches played in Granollers will be this Thursday, with the matches between South Korea and Congo (6pm) and between Denmark and Tunisia (8.30pm), in Group F.
