The Golden State Warriors also clearly prevailed against the Atlanta Hawks and thus continued their dream start into the season. Stephen Curry excelled in the 127-13 victory with the highest score of any player in the current season.
Golden State Warriors (9-1) – Atlanta Hawks (4-7) 127:113 (BOXSCORE)
The two-time MVP gave the Hawks a whopping 50 points (14/28 FG, 9/19 3FG, 13/13 FT) and also distributed 10 assists. It was the tenth 50-point game in his career, so he is in third place on the all-time leaderboard at the Warriors behind Rick Barry (14) and Wilt Chamberlain (105 – no typo!).
“That was just an incredible performance by Steph,” enthused Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “He was amazing. I want to say that I’ve never seen anything like it, but I’ve been seeing it for seven years now. So I’ve seen something like this before and it’s still incredible to look at.”
Curry already had 26 points at the break, but at this point the guests were still slightly ahead (65:61). Atlanta, led by the good Trae Young (28 points, 11/20 FG, 9 assists) initially hit a little better from the field and in places moved the ball very well, in the meantime the Hawks lead even 15 points.
But within the second quarter the Warriors came back step by step, 3.5 seconds before the half-time break Curry pocketed a three that put it on -4. And the third quarter then – as so often in the dynasty years – became the cream of the crop for dubs. The section went to Golden State with 41:20, suddenly the game became a blowout in the other direction.
Stephen Curry shoots the Hawks into crisis
The Hawks remained without a point for over three minutes; In the last five minutes of the third quarter, a Cam Reddish stepback jumper was the guests’ only basketball win against high defensive pressure from the Warriors. They took advantage of this and led to the end of the quarter with 102-85, after Juan Toscano-Anderson (11) again sank a late threesome.
As a result, there was a leakage, the Hawks no longer really came within striking distance. With five minutes to go, Nate McMillan took his starters off the field, Curry stayed a minute longer to make his 50, before he too was allowed to finish early.
Four Warriors alongside Curry scored double-digit points, alongside JTA these were Jordan Poole (16), Andrew Wiggins (13) and Damion Lee (11). In the Hawks, in addition to Young, John Collins (19), Bogdan Bogdanovic (17), De’Andre Hunter and Kevin Huerter (both 11) stood out.
The Warriors are the only team to lose just one season after ten games and lead the West. Atlanta is in crisis, however, it was the fourth loss in a row for last year’s Conference finalists.
