Slot and Dessers surprised by red card: “Looks like amateur football”

Feyenoord achieved the desired result in Prague on Thursday evening, but it was not easy. This was partly due to the red card for Guus Til, which left the team with ten men for almost an hour. The way that red card was given led to a lot of surprise afterwards.

“It was very strange,” Cyriel Dessers said in conversation with ESPN. “I can’t judge whether it was red or not – I couldn’t see that well enough – but the referee gave a yellow first. Then the Slavia players rushed over, he hesitated and drew red. He said something about the linesman, but he was standing sixty meters away. He couldn’t have seen it at all.”

“It seems like amateur football, that a referee is so influenced by the opponent”, Dessers continued full of incomprehension. In the end, it didn’t matter much in the end. “At that moment the decision had already been made and you couldn’t go back. Then you have to switch the button as a team. I think we did that well.”

Trainer Arne Slot spoke in a similar way about that moment during his press conference afterwards. “I have not seen it again, so I don’t want to talk about whether or not it is right. But that you get a yellow card and the referee still decides to give a red card, while there is no VAR present… Again: yes. or not right, I dare not say, but this was really bizarre. I don’t think this has ever been seen before.”
