A 40-year-old man was seriously injured with a machete in the middle of the street, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, this Wednesday evening. He was evacuated to hospital with a vital prognosis. A suspect was arrested soon after and taken into police custody.

Seriously injured in a brawl that occurred at Porte de Clignancourt in Paris (18th century), a man is today between life and death. This Wednesday around 8:35 p.m., a fight broke out between the two men in this popular sector of the capital. One of them, aged 40, suffered blows from a machete on the back and collapsed in the street. Witnesses notified the emergency services and the victim was taken to Beaujon hospital in Clichy (Hauts-de-Seine), with a vital prognosis. When the police arrive on the scene, the assailant has already fled.

Investigators question witnesses and retrieve CCTV footage. They have a good description of the suspect but the attacker cannot be found. At half past midnight, rue Leibniz, the police officers on patrol spot and question a man with a piece of wood that he throws when he sees the police. Significantly worrying, his clothes are stained with dried blood. Next to the suspect, the police discover a machete, a telescopic baton and a baseball bat placed in a corner.

The man was taken into custody at the 18th arrondissement police station where investigators will have to determine whether it is indeed the aggressor of the Porte de Clignancourt, but also to elucidate the reasons for this outburst of violence. According to the first elements, the victim and her alleged attacker are street vendors of cigarettes.

“At 10pm, the dealers and street vendors were at the bottom again”

For several years, residents of this district of the capital have denounced a rise in growing insecurity, even if this corner of Paris has never been deemed to be the most peaceful in the capital. “Seven police vans + Samu + firefighters #PortedeClignancourt. Why ? Because the police are absent when precisely the influx of delinquents in the late afternoon and evening is uncontrolled => nuisance, brawls, injured ”, testifies a local resident on Twitter, before adding a supporting image: “And at 10pm the dealers and street vendors were again at the bottom of the buildings once the police left! An unacceptable inefficiency in the management of the city. Safety and a non-degraded environment for all inhabitants. These are not options… ”
