Sauber CEO Picci resigned after disagreement over 2022 Alfa Romeo line-up

Sauber chief executive Pascal Picci recently resigned after allegedly disagreeing with team boss Fred Vasseur’s decisions regarding the 2022 driver line-up.

Picci has been a very important figure within Sauber for years. He was one of the men who ensured that the team could continue in 2016 through a collaboration with Longbow Finance. He then remained on board as chairman of Sauber Holding, even after the team was taken over by the consortium. Earlier this month, however, the 63-year-old suddenly resigned.

“Yes, I closed the door behind me. I resigned a few days before the Mexican Grand Prix,” Picci explains his sudden departure to Motorsport.com. “I don’t want to be associated with the management of Fred Vasseur in the future,” he says firmly.

Driver line-up 2022

According to Picci, his departure has to do with the driver line-up for 2022, among other things. “The way the drivers were chosen was one of the points where things went wrong between me and the current management,” he explains. “I am sorry that Antonio [Giovinazzi] will no longer drive there and I’m glad [Guanyu] Zhou joins the team.” Based on his statements, you can actually conclude that he would have liked to see Giovinazzi and Zhou as a line-up.
