Sabrina Ionescu, protected from Kobe, gives a rant!

Despite the important mFinancial resources available to sport in the USA, women’s disciplines still lag far behind in terms of fees and coverage. What to unpin some athletes … More recently, it is the young nugget Sabrina Ionescu who released an outing on the subject, via social networks.

While the NBA and other major men’s leagues are enjoying flourishing success, with revenues increasing almost every year, the picture is much less positive when it comes to observing trends in the women’s field. Interest in the latter is minimal, which has particularly disastrous financial consequences. You only have to look at the case of the WNBA to realize it, which is losing revenue season after season.

However, some sportswomen are now doing all they can to remedy this, starting with Sabrina Ionescu. Drafted in first position in 2020, the New York Liberty playmaker is one of the rising stars of the championship. The former Oregon resident is aware of the financial limitations of the female athletic world, and has gone wild on Twitter recently. Its main request, more media visibility:

Sabrina Ionescu calls for better remuneration for women’s sport

I wish I could open up my social media and see the best moments in women’s sport. ESPN, Sportcenter, Bleacher Report, etc. are posting about the NBA, NFL, and Men’s NCAA at the moment. There are so many top 25 teams fighting in the Women’s NCAA right now, without any cover. ???? Do better.

Words as direct as they are shattering, what we are fully entitled to expect from a pupil of Kobe Bryant himself. The good news for Ionescu is that his request has at least been heard by some in the upper echelons of US sport. Joseph Tsai, owner of Brooklyn, responded immediately to his message. His was much shorter, but the content remains very similar:

We can do better.

Sabrina Ionescu did not take gloves to give her opinion on the situation of women’s sport, to say the least. So much the better, because that’s exactly the kind of media release you need to get things done!
