Former ‘supersubs’ Pierre van Hooijdonk and Piet Keur are pleased with the development of Cyriel Dessers. The Feyenoord attacker has played a leading role in the past three games, by scoring the winning goal as a substitute. Keur thinks that the role of pinchhitter could eventually start to eat away at Dessers: the former striker sees him as ‘a young guy who comes across as very ambitious’ and thus wonders how long he will continue to settle for a reserve role. If the attacker does indeed get a base place, then according to Van Hooijdonk he is able to continue scoring goals for Feyenoord.

As a substitute at Feyenoord, Dessers was successively important with late goals against Sparta Rotterdam, Union Berlin and AZ. Keur finds it too easy to paint the 26-year-old attacker as a failed striker who is not good enough for the top clubs. “I have to laugh when I hear people shouting that his goals are pure mistakes of opponents. Then I think: yes, huh, doesn’t that apply to every goal?”, Keur says in conversation with the General Newspaper. “On the other hand, I do think that it unintentionally works to his disadvantage for Dessers that he is always accurate. A trainer might put you on the couch a little easier. Like: as a substitute, he also scores that goal.”

Keur suspects that this situation could eventually start to eat away at Dessers. “A pinch hitter, like me at Heerenveen, is preferably an old man who hates walking too much and likes to sit on ‘that couch’,” says the former professional football player. “Dessers is a young guy who comes across as very ambitious. At a certain moment he may think: playing ninety minutes would also be fun.” The Feyenoord attacker received a basic place from trainer Arne Slot this season only in the Eredivisie match with RKC Waalwijk (1-1).

According to Keur, who made his name as a pinch hitter at sc Heerenveen between 1993 and 1995, Dessers shows with his hits that he is a worthy striker for Feyenoord, something that Van Hooijdonk also endorses. “Dessers undeniably proves that every club should have a pinch hitter,” says the 46-time international, who functioned as a pinch hitter at the Orange squad. “With his opportunism and enthusiasm, Dessers clearly creates a different dynamic at Feyenoord. He has real added value. Although I dispute that he can be important for Feyenoord purely as a substitute. He also scores goals as a basic player. I know for sure.”
