Only Get One Day Break After Final, Kevin/Marcus: BWF Not Fair!

Nusa Dua

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon struggled to get through the first round of the Indonesia Open 2021. Minions felt that BWF was not wise enough to arrange the schedule.

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon immediately played against Keiichiro Matsui/Yoshinori Takeuchi, Tuesday (23/11/2021) afternoon in the first round of the Indonesia Open 2021. This match was held only a day after they played the final of the Indonesia Masters 2021 on Sunday (21/21). 11) then.

The Minions lost the first game 12-21, but came back and took the win 21-18 and 21-15 in the second-third game. Kevin/Marcus admitted that their condition was not ideal because they only had a day off after the final and questioned BWF’s decision.

“First of all, we must be grateful to be able to get through today. And I think BWF treats us a bit like robots,” said Kevin after the match.

“We just finished playing on Sunday, just as we are seeded first, we have to always play Tuesday, right, I think it’s not fair, we don’t get any rest at all, just one day is really not enough, moreover after yesterday’s final was very intense huh.”

“Yes, of course it really affects it (short pause),” he added to reporters.

Kevin/Marcus, who are seeded first, did not expect to play immediately on Tuesday because usually there is a gap of two days after appearing in the final. Moreover, the final against Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi then went on for three fierce games, 11-21, 21-17, and 19-21.

“I also don’t know, right usually when we are in the final, the next game is on Wednesday. That’s why I thought ‘ah, Monday is free, Tuesday is not playing’. Last night the schedule came out ‘Well, play tomorrow?!’ Usually it’s never like that, just here, after the final on Tuesday, we play,” said Marcus.

With a gap of only one day, Kevin/Marcus also came to the Indonesia Open 2021 with the mentality of nothing to lose.

“Yes, we don’t have any special preparations, we have nothing to lose. Even if we lose, what can we do? Indeed, with the conditions as we are, we play here,” said Kevin.

The problem of an unfair schedule is not the only time this has happened. Before Kevin/Marcus, Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu had experienced it earlier this year. After winning the Yonex Thailand Open, Greysia/Apriyani only took a day off before playing in the first round of the Toyota Thailand Open.
